ITALIA, QUESTA SOPRAVVISSUTA… |

La mia prima seria vacanza in tre anni… volo da Atlanta a Roma, cerco di dormire per anticipare un cambio di fuso orario al quale sono completamente disabituato.
Mi sono sempre chiesto come faccia ad esserci una differenza di prezzo doppia fra la prima classe e “coach”- ma credo che la mia schiena cominci ad esigere un trattamento di migliore livello. Dopo una notte insonne, passata a vedere film inevitabilmente mancati dalla frenetica routine di lavoro che precede ogni mio viaggio, arrivo a Roma-Fiumicino trafelato - un aereo pieno di bambini, caffè e cibo sintetico, e queste poltrone scomodissime dove non ci si può distendere neanche a provarci. Chiropratici romani, dove siete?

REFERENDUM 2009 - PER RESIDENTI ALL'ESTERO |
Carissimi cittadini Italiani residenti all'estero.
Circoliamo questo numero speciale dedicato ai membri residenti all'estero e votanti. Molti di voi avranno ricevuto le tre schede del Referendum 2009.
Se, come me, avete aperto il plico e vi siete coimentati nella lettura del testo delle schede individuali, vi sarete grattati la testa.
A meno che non siate aggiornati, poterbbe risultarvi un mistero su cosa si voti. Questo numero speciale del bollettino e' per spiegare qual e' il nocciolo della questione sulla quale si vota: la polverizzazione e frammentazione dei partiti politici in Italia.
Visto che a Ciancia non ci occupiamo di politica e non abbiamo affiliazioni di colore, sottolineiamo che questa non e' una campagna. Intendiamo soltanto chiarire dubbi ed eliminare confusione. Vi offro pertanto le mie moderate considerazioni sul voto.
Sappiamo tutti, sopratutto noi residenti ed emigrati all'estero, che la frammentazione dei partiti politici in Italia e' responsabile dell'ingovernabilita' del nostro amato paese.
Questo referendum sottointende una politica che guarda alla stabilità del nostro paese, che le regioni non riescono a governare, grazie ad una opposizione che non consente di farlo. Gli accordi ed i programmi pre elettorali sono un patto di fiducia, e se le elezioni le ha vinte l'altro polo, bisogna avere il rispetto anche per chi ha votato un programma, e ha formato un governo. I fermi, sono a mio modesto parere, uno spreco di forze e di denaro della collettività, per tutti i parlamentari e ministri ed onorevoli assessori che vengono stipendiati inutilmente, per non produrre, e per combattere solo l'opposizione. Dibattere ha un senso fino al momento del suffragio. Ma non poter governare e' un cancro.
L'Italia e' in cima alle classifiche mondiali dei crolli di governo, due all'anno in alcuni periodi. A questo modello della Torre di Babele, dove ognuno dice la sua, ma non si va da nessuna parte, si aggiunge lo scandalo delle multi-liste (scheda n. 3) che consentono ad un candidato eletto di scegliere l'assegnazione finale ed assegnare gli altri posti ottenuti ad altri candidati di propria scelta, quindi di controllare le liste, con ovvi slittamenti clientelari e di colore.
E' chiaro che vi sono "rischi" in ambedue le direzioni, ma e' certo che la polverizzazione non abbia mai aiutato l'Italia, e un'Italia ingovernabile e' un'Italia allo sbando. Naturalmente, se la vostra affiliazione e' a liste minori potreste optare per la non abrogazione dei decreti sui quali si vota.
Fa parte delle liberta' che abbiamo e rispettiamo la vostra autonomia.
Tuttavia, consiglio a tutti voi votanti di dare una scorsa alla brevissima e concisa "presentazione dei quesiti" circolata dal Ministero degli Esteri per l'appunto al fine di spiegare i contenuti del voto di referendum e chiarire dubbi.

As we mentioned above, Ciancia has been remiss in making the announcement regarding the new consular post in Atlanta. Please accept our apologies. Unfortunately we did not receive any communication regarding the appointment. As some of you may know, Angela della Costanza-Turner has been confirmed Honorary Consul for Atlanta. We are delighted to congratulate her. We wish her the best of luck in this post and hope to have the best of communications with her office and work together closely to provide better service and a friendly approach to the brilliant Italian community of this area. |

The Experience of the Italian Language |
Let me begin from a couple of club liberating considerations: you should not let your level of language proficiency intimidate you. Your good intent is what counts at our meetings. You will be enticed to speak by empathy and by others. That’s is enough to us. Using English as the basis of your communication defeats the purpose of our club, which is to train your ear to a different speech. If you are a beginner, we expect that you make a sincere effort to speak Italian, or to let other willing participants help you. Now let me add a proposition to this: if you have not figured out how you are going to teach yourself some Italian, tapes or CD’s are the answer. A beginner course is inexpensive in comparison to a class. Atlanta is designed by incident and by narrow-minded engineers: I am sure that you commute or drive an hour or so a day to go to work. You could put to use such time instead of listening to mind-numbing local programs, most of which are all talk and no music, and with two exceptions (Public Radio and Atlanta Clark University), are poor, even in terms of music choice. You will be surprised to see what a couple of short sessions a week can do to your mind. Remember, practicing afterwards at our club is free. Better: you don’t have assignments, fees, classes or long-term commitments. You make it if you can. Make a small commitment. Impress us and, ultimately, impress yourself!

What-Private at the Expense of the Public |

I am sure that everyone has been following Wall Street: lending institutions going belly up on a daily basis, Feds on the alert mode, and the scary scene of an economy falling into the unknown. This is one of the longest bear-market periods recorded in history, practically since 2001. The economy is on its knees. The indicators (Dow, Nasdaq and S&P 500) are swinging back and forth like reeds in the storm, a record 800 points the other day, thus allowing speculation over speculation, like termites eating termite waste. Meanwhile, gigantic financial institutions are in serious trouble, and, while the dim-witted continue to sustain that our economy is solid, evidence is pointing to the contrary. As, in perfect Russian style, I have been in line for half an hour to get gas at over $4.00 a gallon, the absence of a healthy energy policy threatens further price-increases and the collapse of the economy hangs like a dark cloud at the horizon of what used to be one of the most coveted assets of this country: the hope in a better future. And what are the Feds offering us to get out of this mess? A giveaway plan to bail out irresponsible institutions. Great! |

A Tricky Equation of Time |

Last month, I was due in Honduras for an important transaction. With a bad back, I travel ultra-light, but this time I took my laptop, just in case. It was a key decision vis-a-vis this editorial. I stayed for four days – long enough to realize that time here passes in a different manner. At first you slow down. Then you feel ineffective. Eventually, you give into the new beat. When that happens, it hits you like a train that, right under our radar, back home we run a life of persistent responsibility, of relentless liability, so pervasive we don’t even see its all-encompassing dominance. This character is noticeable only by contrast and, as you are about to read, in plain sight, it opens a big can of worms. |
